Our first family vacation, with all four of us, since 2005! We left Boston on a sunny Saturday morning that had a hint of spring in it. We were driven to the airport by “Big Rich,” (shown in the lowest photo), Josh’s personal taxi driver. Big Rich drives Josh home when he works late at night. On our departure from Boston we had a fabulous aerial view of our condo and our pier jutting out onto Boston Harbor. By 2PM we were at the Miami airport Hilton. Unfortunately, with the cloud cover and the chilly temperatures it was too cold to sit by the pool. Instead, we explored the property and took a walk along the jogging path. After each tenth of a mile there was an informative sign. We learned that Miami is the only major US city that has been founded by a woman (Julia Tuttle). It is also the only city that borders two national parks (Biscayne and Everglades). Feeling adventurous we decided to go for Cuban food in Little Havana at a restaurant called Las Culebrinas (“the cannons”). It was very exotic; we all felt like we were in another country. Our Anthony Bourdain “moment” came when we ordered deep fried crocodile (“crocodillo”) as an appetizer. Josh is holding it in the upper photo. As Elliott said, if you deep fry anything it usually tastes good. Josh is showing the platter in a blurry photo taken by my blackberry. Cuban cuisine is very big on skirt steak, which we ordered for our main course. Dessert was crème caramel, complete with blow-torching of the sugar topping!
