Give Us Our Ampelmannchen!

October 12, 2013

The ampelmannchen are the “little traffic light men” that were introduced in East Germany on October 13, 1961, almost exactly 52 years ago.
When Germany became reunified, attempts were made to standardize traffic signs and fonts. However, there was a significant pushback when it came to the ampelmannchen, who had become a virtual mascot for the East German nostalgia movement.
They were allowed to stay in the former German Democratic Republic, and have even spawned variations such as the ampelfrau, who can be seen in cities such as Dresden.
I can't wait to go to Dresden, where my grandmother grew up!
