Although there were 600 prisoners imprisoned at a time, and the prison was open for around 45 years, the museum only highlighted the crimes of 4 prisoners. The most notorious of them was named (in Spanish) "Shorty with Big Ears." He killed at least 10 young children and showed no remorse for his crimes. From the description it sounds like he was developmentally delayed and may have had a genetic condition, although the doctors thought that the source of his "wickedness" was his large ears! They tried to do surgery on his ears to no avail. In any event, while going to the town's only post office to buy stamps we noticed that the post office displays a large mural in which Shorty himself takes center stage. We wondered what sort of message this sends to the people of Ushuaia?
