January 14-15, 2012Given that the three-dimensional structure of DNA was determined in Cambridge it is not surprising that there are double helices everywhere in town! The large sculpture on the lawn is in front of Clare College. The sculpture called "Helix" was in installed in a concrete wall the front of the hotel where I stayed (The Varsity Hotel). It is supposed to acknowledge the transformative scientific discovery that occurred in this town, but also the whorls and eddies of the nearby river Cam, as well as the cyclic nature of time. By the way, the art inside the Varsity Hotel was also quite interesting and related to other scientists who studied at Cambridge, including Sir Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin.
