The fleur de lis, or “lily flower” was a symbol of the Bourbon
family, and it can be seen in crests and flags from all over Europe. The three parts of
the flower symbolize faith, wisdom, and chivalry. Because
King Louis XIV (the Sun King) had Bourbon origins, the symbol came to North
America along with the colonization of Canada and Louisiana (Louis’ land).

When
the French took over New Orleans the fleur de lis was incorporated into the
city flag. Eventually it became a symbol of New Orleans itself. Today it is
said that the three parts of the lily flower represent the storm (Katrina), the
city’s destruction, and its rebirth. The fleur de lis is EVERYWHERE. I include
here a few photos to show examples.
