Disney: It Just Ain't My Thing

March 21-22, 2013

My next trip was to Orlando for the annual Society for Gynecological Investigation meeting. The meeting was held at a hotel within Disney World. Here is the sunrise view from my hotel window.

I have nothing against Disney World, but it just ain’t my thing. It was fun when we went there when Josh and Elliott were young, but it is a bit odd to hold a professional convention there in the midst of spring break! As an example, we would come out of the very intense scientific sessions and mingle in the hallways with families dressed up in various Disney costumes.
I do not know the family shown in the photo, but the Mom graciously allowed me to take a picture of her with her daughters, who were dressed as Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Princess Jasmine.
One night we decided to embrace the fact that we were in Disney World, and our lab team went to the restaurant Sanaa for dinner. Sanaa is in the Animal Kingdom, and it was very cool to watch zebras, wildebeasts, and giraffes walking around outside the restaurant.
The food was African-inspired, but the drinks were decidedly Disney. The women got Tinkerbell punch and Faycal, the only man in our group, got Buzz Light Year punch. All drinks came with glowing toys attached to the straws and created a festive, if alcohol-free, ambience.
