It was finally time to get down to the business of my trip to Berlin, which is to speak at the International Congress of Pediatric Laboratory Medicine. The Opening Ceremony included a lovely concert with young women who played multiple types of recorders. Being used to grade school recorder concerts I was surprised at how beautiful and diverse the music sounded. These young women were no amateurs, as they have traveled all over the world and played in numerous competitions. The opening ceremony was held at the Charite Hospital, which is famous for Robert Koch’s discovery there of the bacillus that caused tuberculosis. The conference and my talk were at the International Conference Center in another part of town. At night we and the other the conference participants had dinner on a boat that cruised on the Spree River.
