There are 6,000 people on RapaNui and 3,000 “wild” horses.
“Wild” is in quotes because supposedly each horse belongs to someone, but they
pretty much have free reign on the island.
They mate very effectively as well.
We came across many ponies, including this albino one that several people have
told me looks like a unicorn.
It is interesting that some of the archeological
sites have restricted areas where people cannot go, but horses can go
everywhere. And they probably cause more damage than the humans to the ahus
(platforms!) Horses die, too, and we saw evidence of bleached bones on our
treks.
We saw this magnificent chestnut stallion standing alone at the top of a
hill and knew that he would be part of a very special picture.
