We have certainly eaten well on this trip! For Josh and Elliott's last night in Cancun (due to work obligations and last minute Christmas shopping, they wanted to leave a few days before John and I), we chose the resturant that is ranked by Trip Advisor as number one in Cancun-Peter's resturant. We all concurred that it is number one for a reason--the food was outstanding! Peter's is a small, family-run restaurant in the downtown area of Cancun. While La Habichuela has a more unique and charming atmosphere, the food at Peter's was better. The chef, Peter Houten, is from Maastricht, but he told us he has been in Mexico for the past 22 years. The cuisine was continental using locally sourced ingredients when possible. I had grilled hogfish over polenta, which was surrounded by local vegetables. John had veal medallions with a marsala sauce. Elliott had ribs with a tamarind sauce, and Josh celebrated Christmas early with a delicious beef tenderloin. The desserts were interesting--Josh had a key lime pie, but the "twist" was an accompanying lime sherbert with tequila. Elliott had chocolate and banana crepes, while John and I had warm poached pears with melted camembert and a warm honey sauce infused with spices. We now understand why several people wrote in Trip Advisor that they went back to Peter's for a second meal during their vacation!
