Between 1870 and the early 1900s the Gaslight District
(Gastown) was the commercial hub of Vancouver. By the 1960s, however, the area
declined and became the heart of Skid Row. Eventually, in a community-business
partnership the area was restored. Today, the neighborhood proudly displays its
Heritage plaques on notable buildings.
There are many cutting-edge fashion and
design shops in the area, as well as a few of the ubiquitous Canadian souvenir
shops. One thing that you won’t see elsewhere, however, are Native people
spontaneously carving wood totems on the sidewalk.
