Arriving jet-lagged at Milano’s Linate Airport I saw an Armani sign on the hangar and I began to fantasize about what the décor would
look like inside…it was an appropriate introduction to one of the fashion
capitals of the world, as symbolized by this giant Claes Oldenberg sculpture of
a needle and thread. I did not realize, however, until this trip that the
fashion industry in Milan was essentially a post-World War II development.
