After two days at the resort we were anxious to see more of
the country so we booked a tour to see the Gamboa Rainforest. Gamboa is the town that is exactly in the
middle of the Panama Canal, at the intersection of the Chagres River and the
Canal. There is an eco-tourist resort in the mountains that rise from the
river. We took a tram ride to the top of the mountain, which provided a
spectacular view of the scenery. We were also able to get our first look at some
ships coming down the Canal.

Our guide, Felipe, showed us indigenous plants
used by the native Embera Indians to make medicines and weapons. Shown here is
a red flowered plant that he called the “Angelina Jolie” lip plant that is used
to treat hemorrhoids.
There were also many impressively large termite and ant
nests.

Felipe took picture of our family at the top of the observation tower. To the left of Josh's head is the Chagres River. Chagres is an Indian word that means full of crocodiles.
