Duomo at Dusk

May 30, 2014

I have never really been a tourist in Milan, as we have always either been passing through, or visiting relatives. On my first evening I got to have dinner with my first cousin Bianca Rosa, who took me on a lovely walking tour of central Milan. It was dusk, and there was a storm coming, so the light was very dramatic shining on the Duomo.

Our walking tour included the famous opera venue, the Teatro Alla Scala and one of the world’s oldest shopping malls, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II, named after the first King of Italy. On the floor of the gallery, there are inlaid designs, including the shields of various cities and regions.

Bianca Rosa in the mall!

The shield of Turin contains a bull in its center. Legend has it that if you dig your heel into the bull’s balls and spin three times you will have “buona fortuna” (good luck). This has been done so many times that the floor has worn away!
