Situated on 14 islands and connected by many bridges,
Stockholm is surrounded by water. The name “Stockholm” comes from “stock,”
meaning a collection of, and “holme,” meaning islets.
Stockholm
was a commercial city by the 1400s but it really came to power with the
ascension to the throne of Gustav Vasa. Stockholm
became the capital of Sweden in 1634. The Old Town, or Gamla Stan, dates from
the 1500s. The Center Square is the location of the Nobel Museum, which we
visited in 2011 (link).

The water surrounding the city is so clean
that you can safely swim in it and eat the fish you catch. In the photo you see
men fishing with the subway trains rolling by. I was told that a few weeks ago people were catching salmon in town!
